‘Scoob’ Will Skip Theaters and Debut on Digital Platforms in May

Variety – Warner Bros.’ “Scoob,” an animated film based on “Scooby-Doo” characters, will skip its planned theatrical release and instead launch next month on digital rental services.

Starting May 15, “Scoob” will be available to rent for $19.99 in the U.S. and Canada. It will also be available to buy for $24.99. The movie, geared toward younger audiences, was originally scheduled to debut in theaters on May 15, but was indefinitely delayed as the coronavirus pandemic forced cinemas to close.

While we’re all eager to be able to once again show our films in theaters, we’re navigating new, unprecedented times which call for creative thinking and adaptability in how we distribute our content,” Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff said in a statement. “We know fans are eager to see ‘Scoob’ and we’re delighted we can deliver this feel-good movie for families to enjoy while they’re home together.

The decision to drastically alter release plans for “Scoob” comes after Universal’s announcement that “Trolls World Tour” — which also amended its theatrical rollout in favor of premium video on demand — landed the biggest debut for a digital rental.

The news is another thwack to movie theater owners, who have been adamantly against any attempts to shorten a film’s life span in their venues. Studios have been forced to reshuffle their release calendars, delaying many tentpoles and finding new release dates for others as theaters remain closed with no clear sign of when they can safely reopen.

For the most part, studios have committed to keeping their major movies on the big screen. However, Paramount opted to sell its romantic comedy “The Lovebirds” to Netflix, while Disney sent sci-fi adventure “Artemis Fowl” to Disney Plus, the studio’s streaming service.

“Scoob” was directed by Tony Cervone and follows childhood best friends Shaggy, Fred, Velma and Daphne, who solve crimes along with Shaggy’s pet dog, Scooby-Doo. The voice cast includes Will Forte, Gina Rodriguez, Zac Efron and Amanda Seyfried.

Wonder Woman 1984, In The Heights And Scoob! Are All Being Delayed

Empire – There has recently been some chatter suggesting that Wonder Woman 1984 could be next on the list of films heading to video on demand. But Warner Bros. has decided instead to move the new superhero film, shifting it from planned cinematic June release to August.

“When we greenlit WW 1984 it was with every intention to be viewed on the big screen and are excited to announce that Warner Bros. Pictures will be bringing the film to theatres on August 14th. We hope the world will be in a safer and healthier place by then,” says WB. Motion Picture Group Chairman Toby Emmerich in a statement. It makes sense – given the enormous resources poured into making the movie, a home entertainment release, even at the price being used by other studios, just didn’t work without an initial big-screen showing.

The studio has also decided to move some of its other movies, all of which are now waiting to learn when they’ll arrive: Scooby-Doo origin story Scoob!, Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical In The Heights and James Wan’s latest horror, Malignant among them. The latter is moving from August to make room for Wonder Woman 1984.

Amanda Joins Animated Scooby-Doo Film ‘Scoob’

The Wrap — Zac Efron and Amanda Seyfried have joined the cast of Warner Bros.’ Scooby-Doo animated feature “Scoob,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Efron will voice Fred, while Seyfried will play Daphne. Tony Cervone is directing, while Chris Columbus, Charles Roven, Pam Coats and Allison Abbate are serving as producers.

Gina Rodriguez will voice Velma, while Will Forte will play Shaggy and Tracy Morgan will voice Captain Caveman — not part of the Scooby-Doo universe but a Hanna-Barbera character like the Scooby gang. Frank Welker will be voicing Scooby.

In the film, the Mystery Inc. group will team up with other members of the Hanna-Barbera universe to save the world from Dick Dastardly.

The last “Scooby” film to hit theaters was “Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed” in 2004. That film made $84.2 million at the box office. It served as a sequel to 2002’s “Scooby-Doo,” which earned $153.3 million. The originally television series debuted in 1969, and many spin-off series have been produced since due to its success.

Efron most recently starred in “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” and “The Greatest Showman,” and will next be seen opposite Matthew McConaughey in “The Beach Bum.” He is represented by CAA, Alchemy Entertainment and Viewpoint.

Seyfried was last seen in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” and will next appear in “The Art of Racing in the Rain” and “You Should Have Left.” She is represented by Innovative Artists and Relevant.
